Snow Camp Backpack
 

Trip# 6: Onyx Summit Snowshoe Mar 21-22  Grade: M4BDate: 3/21/2026

We'll drive to Onyx Summit, then snowshoe in 1 mile to the Pacific Crest Trail and set up camp. During the afternoon, we'll build a snow kitchen and one (or more) shelters if there is enough snow. If there is not enough snow we will hike to Onyx Peak.

Sunday after breakfast we'll tear down the snow kitchen and if we have not already done so hike to Onyx Peak. Then we return to camp, pick up our packs and hike out to our cars.

Special Outing Requirements: Snow Shoes and/or micro spikes
Hiking poles with snow baskets
Pot for melting snow, and a prefilter (like a coffee filter)
2 wide mouth bottles.
3 or 4 Season Tent
Waterproof Boots with snow gaiters
Cold weather clothing (please see Snow Camp checklist)
Closed cell foam pad in combination with any other sleeping pad.
Buddy Burner (optional)

Water Requirements: 2 liters

Bouldering/scrambling with BACKPACK
Bouldering/scrambling with DAYPACK
Rocky, rough, uneven terrain
Hiking through thick brush or bushes
4WD vehicle required
High clearance vehicle required
