Get ready for an adventure-packed winter weekend in the snow! We’ll begin with a scenic ride aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, ascending into a true alpine wonderland. From the top, we’ll strap on our snowshoes and make our way approximately three miles to Round Valley, enjoying breathtaking views as we travel through the snowy forest. We’ll set up camp at one of the beautiful sites—Buckhorn or Snowberry—nestled in the heart of the San Jacinto backcountry. Once camp is established, we’ll build a snow kitchen (be sure to bring rubber gloves!), carving out benches and cooking platforms for an authentic winter camping experience. After settling in, we’ll host a tent tour to share different setups, tips, and tricks. If time and energy allow, we may head out for a scenic afternoon hike to explore the area further. Throughout the day, we’ll sharpen our navigation skills using map and compass, along with Gaia, to better understand our surroundings and build confidence traveling in winter terrain. In the evening, we’ll gather for a cozy potluck dinner and enjoy some fun games as we wind down under the snowy pines. Sunday morning, after breakfast, we assess snow conditions and group energy for the day’s adventure. We plan to snowshoe toward Wellman Divide, and if time permits—and the group is feeling strong—we may even summit Jean Peak or San Jacinto Peak. After returning to camp, we’ll break down our snow kitchen masterpiece, pack up our tents, and snowshoe back to the tram station. Winter magic, mountain views, new skills, and great company—what more could we ask for? ???????
Special Outing Requirements: You should have or rent trekking poles (with snow baskets) to use with your snowshoes. Microspikes are highly recommended. Only free-standing 3-season tents with vestibules and sturdy pole systems will be allowed (or a 4-season tent). You should also have some type of gaiter to wear when we are snowshoeing. Tent sharing is encouraged, for warmth and to share the weight of carrying the tent. You will need a daypack for our snowshoe hikes, and rubber gloves for building the snow kitchen.
Water Requirements: 2 quarts of water in your pack and additional capacity for filtering water. |
