Trip# 11: San Gorgonio South Fork to Dry Lake Snowshoe Mar 14-15  Grade: H8DDate: 3/14/2026
Leader: Garrett EatonAssistant: June Thompson
San Gorgonio Wilderness surrounds the tallest peak in Southern California at 11,495'. One of its most beautiful trails is South Fork, which we will use to snowshoe up to Dry Lake and camp at 9,000'. We will start our 6 mile, 2300' vertical gain backpack very early Saturday morning to allow time to enjoy the scenery, learn to set up camp on snow, and then to explore the area on snowshoes.

Our objectives will depend on current snow conditions, weather and group interest. An optional day hike will afford the perfect opportunity to practice off-trail navigation skills and take in the views. In camp, we will learn how to keep our bodies and gear functioning efficiently and comfortably in winter conditions at altitude. Sunday we will continue to explore the area as we head down.

Precipitation immediately before the trip may create road conditions that require AWD vehicles to access the trailhead. We will coordinate between leaders and students with capable vehicles as needed. A weather update will be provided prior to the trip so we are prepared.

This trip will be strenuous. Prior backpacking experience at altitude is ideal; however, excellent fitness is essential.

Special Outing Requirements: Excellent fitness to carry a 45-lb pack 6 miles and up 2300' of vertical gain. You'll need snowshoes, trekking poles (with snow baskets), gaiters, properly-rated sleeping bag, 2 sleeping pads (one inflatable and one closed cell foam), waterproof jacket and pants, water-resistant boots that have been tried and tested, gloves and hat, dark sunglasses and sunscreen. Kitchen or waterproof gloves recommended for handling snow. Bear-resistant storage will be provided by leaders. One USFS Adventure Pass needed per vehicle.
