Trip# 1: Mountain Palm Springs Jan 31-Feb 1  Grade: M4ADate: 1/31/2026
Leader: Katherine SheetsAssistant: Joshua Ruhl
The Mountain Palm Springs area boasts some of the most charming palm oases in the Anza-Borrego Desert. The palms here are gregarious and grow in dense clusters, often with pools of water at their feet. After setting up our tents and camp kitchen, we will have a tent tour, an introductory orientation on using a map and compass, and a discussion of camp sanitation.

After a snack (or lunch), we will go on a 2.5 mile day hike to explore four palm oases. We do not gain or lose much altitude, but the terrain is rocky and uneven, so trekking poles are recommended. On Saturday afternoon, we will also have water filtration and backpack packing demonstrations.

We will return to camp before dark to prepare for our campfire, happy hours and dinner.

After breakfast on Sunday, we will break camp and head home.

Special Outing Requirements: Sturdy hiking shoes or boots required due to rocky terrain, a daypack, 2 lunches, 1 dinner, 1 breakfast, snacks, and an appetizer or dessert if you wish. Firewood will be appreciated for our campfire. Trekking poles highly recommended. Bring your 10 Essentials! Use of WAG Bags is required.

VEHICLE PARKING FEES AT CAMPSITE: $25 for first vehicle. $10 (exact change required) for each additional vehicle. Students are responsible to pay their own fees, carpooling is recommended.
